Hollywood will soon have a new Walmart.
The city's Planning & Zoning Board, this week, approved plans to build a 180,000 square-foot store on the former Millennium Mall site, on the corner of State Road 7 and Hollywood Boulevard.
The building has remained vacant since the mall closed in 2005. The site was once the epicenter of shopping when it was the Hollywood Fashion Center, but in the early 1990s, when stores began to move to different shopping centers, the mall closed.
The development company Dacar Management bought the land four years ago and vowed to fix up the area.
Construction on the store is set to begin in 2014 and by spring of 2015 a hiring center will open. The full-service store, which will employ about 300 people, will likely open during the summer of 2015.
Dacar also bought most of the shopping center across the street.
The center has support from the nearby Lawn Acres Civic Association.
