Two men, 79 and 91, killed when Tri-Rail train crashes into their car

William Richards was heading east on West Atlantic Boulevard Sunday afternoon when he tried to cross the train tracks in his white Hyundai.

Richards never made it.

A northbound Tri-Rail train slammed into the Hyundai killing the 91-year-old man and his 79-year-old passenger, Richard Leftingwell, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The accident, which happened near the 1400 block of West Atlantic Boulevard in Pompano Beach, is being investigated by BSO's Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit.

Richards drove over the train crossing at Atlantic Boulevard just before 9:30 a.m. when his car was struck. The commuter train was traveling at the regulated speed limit of approximately 79 mph, BSO said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Det. Donnard Huneke at 954-321-4842 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
