Broward County Public Schools, Innovation Florida, Wyncode Academy and The South Florida Accelerator are launching a pilot computer coding program this summer for high school students. Twenty BCPS students are participating in the eight-week course.

“This program affords our students an incredible opportunity to expand their skills in computer coding as they explore the many potential career pathways available in this growing industry,” said Dan Gohl, BCPS chief academic officer.

The computer coding program teaches coding languages including HTML/CSS, JavaScript and Ruby on Rails. Upon completion of the program, students earn a certificate of completion from Wyncode Academy and they will have a dynamic web app that they built over the eight-week course. They also earn a high school honors internship credit.

The goal of the course is to inspire more students to pursue careers in computer coding and technology-related industries. “Innovation and technology go hand in hand – the importance of immersing students into coding culture is paramount and cannot be overestimated,” said Maria Sachs, executive director of Innovation Florida.
