Man faces theft charge after swiping a cell phone from a courthouse metal detector

Just because you find something, doesn't mean it's yours.

That's the message the Broward Sheriff's Office is trying to deliver by releasing surveillance video of a man whom deputies say walked off with a woman's forgotten cell phone at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale.

According to BSO, a man, who is about 6 feet tall and sported dreadlocks in a ponytail, walked through the metal detector at about 3 p.m. May 1 and set it off because of his belt. He took it off and walked back through. Meanwhile, a woman put her belongings including a Samsung 6 Edge Plus in a basket and sent it through the scanner.

She grabbed her purse but left the phone in the basket, the video showed.

The man then walked through the detector again and grabbed his belt from the scanner. He spotted the phone, snatched it and walk away.

The man can now face a theft charge, according to BSO.

Anyone with information is asked to call BSO Det. Joe Kessling at 954-831-7330 or Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
