A man was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run crash in Dania Beach while he and his roommate were crossing the street after buying groceries.

The accident happened at about 7:25 p.m. at 2600 Griffin Road, not far from the popular Tropical Acres Steakhouse, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

BSO Spokeswoman Dani Moschella said the men were crossing from the south side to the north side of the street to get to their home in a nearby trailer park, when a car heading westbound slammed into the 57-year-old man.

The man, who police did not identify because his family had not been notified, was taken to Memorial Regional hospital, where he died.

The roommate, Bill Hidden, was not injured and stayed on scene. He told police he saw a red Ford pick-up truck take off.

“Detectives have talked to his roommate, and he answered questions about what happened,” Moschella said. “But we need the public to call in tips about this vehicle.”

Moschella said detectives have not confirmed what kind of vehicle was involved but said it likely had damage to the front right side.

“It doesn’t benefit drivers involved in an accident to leave the scene,” she said. “Eventually they are caught, and they will face much tougher charges than if they would have stayed.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
