Whatever happened inside the Play by Play Sports Lounge in Pompano Beach as Oct. 30 became Oct. 31 is unclear, but what happened outside is unquestioned: Someone shot 26-year-old Derek Willard dead.

For what happened outside, Broward Sheriff’s Office arrested on Tuesday Deerfield Beach resident Gerald Carey, 25, and Pompano Beach’s Dalton Carlton, 26.

Carey faces a charge of first-degree murder. He’ll remain in custody until trial. He was on three years probation after serving three years, nine months for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon; two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon without intent to kill; burglary; and battery on a law enforcement officer or firefighter.

Carlton was charged with being an accessory after the fact of a first-degree felony. His bond sits at $500,000. A month earlier, he finished probation for driving with a suspended license and speeding.

BSO says Williard returned to the Play by Play after being kicked out of the bar earlier in the evening. He parked in the rear, near where Carey stood with some other men. Police believe Carey went into the bar with the men, came out with Carlton and shot Willard several times as he stood next to his car.

A Crime Stoppers tip on Nov. 2 fingered Corey as the shooter.
