Dynamic duo: Gables High, Ransom Everglades share track & new pool

The high school kids are so wrapped up in staring at themselves on the Jumbotron, they don’t even notice the coach trying to get their attention. Swimmers from Coral Gables Senior High School, they’ve been practicing at Ransom Everglades School’s new state-of-the-art $12.5 million aquatic center – a major change from their old practice spot, the AD Barnes public pool.

“It’s like going from a third-world country to Beverly Hills,” said Gables High swimming coach Alexander Donis.

Ransom Everglades offered Gables High use of the pool in exchange for use of Gables High’s track. Ransom’s location and space on South Bayshore Drive prevented building a track for the track team, and Gables High had been shelling out $9,000 each year to use the pool at AD Barnes. Gables High’s swimming and water polo team have 2½ hours a day to use the pool from Monday through Friday, while Ransom track teams can use Gables High’s track with no set schedule.

“We realized that there is something we need from each other,” explained Gables High Athletics Director Louis Romero.
