The father of Omar Mateen, the Orlando mass shooter, posted a video overnight Sunday in which he expressed his regret and sorrow over his son’s actions and said he had no idea what the young man had been planning.
“My name is Seddique Mateen. I am Omar Mateen’s father,” the emigre from Afghanistan says firmly but in broken English, staring into the camera.
In the monologue posted on Facebook, Mageen says his son came from a “well-to-do home” and was “well-behaved” growing up. “His appearance was perfect,” he said, adding his son received “a lot of love and care.”
He noted that his son was well-educated, having received an associate’s degree in criminal justice.
“If I did know it, I would have stopped him,” Mateen says of the Sunday morning massacre at the Pulse nightclub. “I know as much as you do.”
If his son were here today, he said, he would ask: “Why did he do this? Why did he do?”
“I was from Afghanistan. My feelings are totally American. ...My regrets and my condolences and my sympathy for those families who lost their loved ones.”
