Services to be held Sunday for Miami Beach developer Oscar Baisman
Services will be held Sunday morning for Miami Beach architect and developer Oscar Baisman, who was a prominent member of the Hispanic rights group the Spanish American League Against Discrimination.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery, 1125 NW 137th St., Miami. It will be immediately followed by shiva at Grove Isle, 2 Grove Isle Dr., Miami.
Baisman was one of the founding members of SALAD, which was established in 1974 by a group of Hispanic residents, including many Cuban Americans. Its original goal was to focus public attention on the under-representation of Hispanics in the school system, local government and judicial system.
Baisman served not only on the board of SALAD but also on the Metro-Dade County Community Relations Board and on the Miami Beach Planning Board.
He was also active in Miami Beach politics, helping launch a group called Hispanics for Better Representation to register Latin voters.
