The Miami Herald is expanding its coverage of the everyday challenges of life in South Florida with the addition of reporter Amaia Gavica, who joins the newsroom today to cover the new Surviving Miami beat.

Gavica will lead coverage focused on the realities of living in South Florida, from affordability and traffic to quality of life and consumer issues. Her mission is not just to shed light on challenges, but to provide solutions to help readers navigate life in the Magic City.

She comes to Miami from Bradenton, where she covered breaking news. She was already on the job in college, where she reported for the Idaho Statesman and was a digital reporter for Cronkite News in Washington, D.C.

Originally from Idaho, Gavica graduated from Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where she served as president of the Cronkite Foreign Affairs and International Reporting Club. She was selected as one of three student reporters to cover the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and was recognized as a White House scholar.

When she’s not chasing news, you might find her pumping iron — Gavica is training for her first weightlifting competition in the Olympics category.

As a newcomer to South Florida, Gavica brings a fresh perspective to the challenges and surprises of life in Miami. She’s eager to hear from readers about the issues shaping their daily lives, and can be reached at amaia.gavica@miamiherald.com.
