As of Friday, Dec. 5, the U.S. Postal Service had already delivered more than 3.7 billion pieces of holiday mail this season, according to an online tracker.
“The holiday season is the busiest time of year,” the postal service said in a Nov. 28 statement.
The federal mail service has added sorting machines to increase its daily capacity to 88 million packages in 2025, compared to 60 million in 2024, officials said.
The USPS also hired 14,000 temporary employees for the 2025 holiday season.
“This holiday season, customers can expect their mail and packages to be delivered, on average, in less than three days,” USPS said. “For shipping within the same regional service areas, holiday customers can expect a two- to three-day turnaround.”

What are USPS deadlines for holiday mail?
The Postal Service suggests sending mail and packages by USPS ground advantage or first class mail by Wednesday, Dec. 17, in order to arrive before Christmas, Dec. 25, if you’re shipping to or from Florida or the other lower U.S. states.
Christmas cards and holiday presents, for example, shipped by priority mail can be sent as late as Dec. 18, the postal service said, and priority mail express shipments can be sent by Saturday, Dec. 20.
Cut-off dates for shipping to Alaska and Hawaii as well as Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories vary from Tuesday, Dec. 16, to Saturday, Dec. 20, depending on the destination, according to the USPS.
