Trump announces G20 will be held at his Doral golf resort next year

President Donald Trump announced the G20 summit, a gathering of the leaders of the world’s largest economies, will be held at his Doral golf course next year.

The president made the announcement in the Oval Office on Friday with Miami Mayor Francis Suarez at his side.

“It’s going to be a very exciting thing to host the G20 and as we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary,” Trump said. “It’ll be held in one of our country’s greatest cities, beautiful Miami, Florida.”

McClatchyDC reported in July that an announcement was in the works. The summit is scheduled for early December 2026.

Suarez praised the decision, noting the millions of dollars it will add to the local economy.

“It puts the city on the map as one of the truly great global cities,” the mayor told the president. “So on behalf of all of the workers of Miami, those that work in the hospitality industry — I know you own many hospitality assets and properties — all of the small business owners who are going to benefit economically from having the G20 in Miami, we just say thank you.”

Along with financial infusion, the summit will bring in a multitude of security personnel, resulting in road closures, increased traffic and extended wait times.

The timing coincides with that of Art Basel, the massive fair of modern and contemporary art. Suarez said the city would work with the group to de-escalate any conflicting dates.

Trump has wanted to host a major gathering at his Miami-Dade County property since his first term. And he said others want it to be there.

“Look, it’s got the weather. We’re in December. So it’s, you know, cold in some places,” he noted. “Miami really wanted it. The mayor really wanted it. The people down there really wanted it.”

And he pointed out another benefit.

“Everybody wants it there because it’s right next to the airport,” he said. “It’s the best location. It’s beautiful.”

Trump National Doral has the facilities for it, including 100,000 square feet of meeting space, according to the club’s website, along with private cabanas and the Crystal Ballroom. It is less than 10 miles from Miami International Airport.

“The G20 is coming to Miami in 2026 — and Doral is ready to shine. From business to culture, we’ll showcase our city on the world stage,” Doral Mayor Christi Fraga said on X.

The president said every country participating would have its own set of rooms and he vowed his family wouldn’t personally benefit from his decision.

In his first term, Trump proposed hosting the G7 summit in Doral, when he was scheduled to host the gathering in 2020. Ultimately it was canceled due to the covid-19 pandemic.

The United States holds the G20’s presidency in 2026 — a position that rotates among the 19 countries and the European Union, which make up the group.

South Africa will host this year’s conference. Trump said he would not attend but would send Vice President JD Vance in his place.

The president has accused the nation of “white genocide” and criticized its treatment of white farmers. He cut U.S. funding to South Africa and offered white Afrikaners refugee status in the U.S. Much of his criticism originates to when Elon Musk, a South African native, was a member of his administration.

The South African government has pushed back at the genocide claims and noted there is no evidence of any widespread targeting of whites.

Trump, looking ahead to next year, also vowed to host a smaller, more scaled-back summit than previous gatherings, noting his focus would be on the member nations and a few invited guest leaders.

Poland will be one of the guests but the president declined to name any others.

National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett will serve as the point person for the G20 and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is organizing the agenda.
