‘No Kings’ anti-Trump protests planned across South Florida amid LA unrest. See where

An anti-Trump group is planning protests Saturday in more than 1,500 cities nationwide — including several in South Florida.

The group, dubbed No Kings, underscored the protests were planned in response to President Donald Trump’s planned military parade in Washington, D.C. to commemorate the U.S. Army’s 250th birthday and Flag Day.

But in a statement, organizers said the rallies are taking on more importance in the wake of Trump sending the California Army National Guard and U.S. Marines to Los Angeles to protect federal law enforcement and property during this week’s protests against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s operations in the city.

“The No Kings mobilizations on June 14 were already planned as a peaceful stand against authoritarian overreach and the gross abuse of power this Administration has shown,” No Kings said in a statement on its website.

In South Florida, the events are planned from Key West to Fort Lauderdale, per the group’s website.

“On Saturday, more than 1,800 rallies will take place across the country — peaceful, organized, and united. Join your community. Bring a sign. Make it clear: we don’t do kings in this country.”

During a meeting with the Florida Cabinet Tuesday morning, Gov. Ron DeSantis warned protesters that law enforcement in the state will not tolerate things like burning cars, vandalism and rock throwing that have been seen over the course of the Los Angeles protests.

“The minute you cross into attacking law enforcement, any type of rioting, any type of vandalism, looting, just be prepared to have the law come down on you,” DeSantis said. “We will make an example of you. You can guarantee it.”

Three of the protests are scheduled for the Florida Keys. Departments enforcing law throughout the island chain said they don’t anticipate trouble.

“We are prepared to keep everyone safe as we always are when there are protests,” said Alyson Crean, spokeswoman for the Key West Police Department.

Likewise, Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay, who oversees the largest law enforcement agency in the Keys, said there is no current plan to increase deputies in preparation for the protests. He said his department is supportive of people’s right to protest peacefully and will do its part to facilitate that.

Like DeSantis said, though, any type of violence, vandalism or blocking traffic will not be tolerated, Ramsay said.

“We believe Keys citizens will be respectful of people’s rights. As long as it’s peaceful, we’re there to help them and protect them,” he said.

Fort Lauderdale police said increased pedestrian traffic will likely mean vehicle traffic will be impacted at A1A and Sunrise Boulevard late morning into the afternoon. The department said drivers should use Las Olas Boulevard or Oakland Park Boulevard as an alternate route to access the barrier island.

“We urge participants to immediately report suspicious or nefarious activity,” the department said in a statement. “Safety will always be our top priority.”
