A Boca Raton police officer opened fire on a man Wednesday morning — killing him, authorities said. Details are sparse on what triggered the deadly turn of events.

Around 11:30 a.m., there was an encounter between the officer and the man along Northwest Second Avenue between Northwest Second Street and Palmetto Park Road, Boca Raton police spokeswoman Jessica Desir said.

No details on the encounter were released, but the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting, which is standard protocol.

The deceased man has not been identified. Additionally, police did not specify if the officer was put on leave as the investigation continues.
