Looking for a way to avoid traffic after Ultra? Tri-Rail offers special trains

Roads will be blocked and crowds will form this weekend as thousands descend on Miami’s Bayfront Park for the Ultra Music Festival. Those seeking alternate transportation can look to Tri-Rail, which will be offering “special” late-night trains to ease traffic woes.

From Friday, March 25, to Sunday, March 27, when the Ultra Music Festival is scheduled, the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority will have an extra northbound train departing from the Miami airport station at 1 a.m. after the end of each day’s concerts. A second train will also depart at 2:30 a.m. to meet the last Metrorail train in service those nights.

Another “special” train will leave at 11 p.m. and 12:45 a.m. following Sunday’s concert.

“The return of these types of major public events is a great sign that life is getting back to normal in our region,” said Steven Abrams, SFRTA executive director, in a statement. “As gas prices rise, Tri-Rail’s ridership continues to increase, and what better way to save on gas and avoid the hassle of driving in and out of Miami than taking the train.”

How do I get from Ultra to the Tri-Rail?

Miami’s transportation infrastructure can be a little confusing to visitors as you’ll need to walk and jump between the Metrorail, Metromover and Tri-Rail.

Here’s a step-by-step guide from Ultra to the Tri-Rail:

Metromover: At the south end of Bayfront Park is the Metromover, near the corner of Southeast Second Street and Biscayne Boulevard. It’s free, running until 2 a.m. and will drop you off at the Metrorail’s Government Center station, where you need to be.

With the large Ultra crowds, however, walking to the Government Center station is the next best option. Just a few blocks a way at 101 NW First Street.

Metrorail: Metrorail’s Government Center station is what will ultimately get you to the Tri-Rail. Use the Orange Line Metrorail to get to the Miami International Airport Station. The rail fare is $2.25.

Tri-Rail: Once off the Metrorail at the Miami International Airport Station, you’ve made it to the Miami airport Tri-Rail station.

Do late trains cost more?

The regular weekday Tri-Rail fares are in effect on Friday, and for Saturday and Sunday the fares will be $5.

“We are happy to collaborate with this major event to showcase Tri-Rail’s service options to younger audiences who we hope will become future riders,” Abrams said.

The SFRTA is also reminding riders that alcohol is forbidden on Tri-Rail.
