A mother drove onto the Brightline tracks, left her car and took the infant, cops say
A Brightline train hit a car Tuesday after a woman drove onto the tracks, but she escaped with her baby before impact, Delray Beach police said.
The 28-year-old mother was taken into custody for a mental health assessment under the Baker Act, Delray Beach police public information manager Ted White said. He said police believe she drove onto on the train tracks from a dead-end street about 150 yards north of Southwest 10th Street, which is the nearest crossing.
“The vehicle became stuck on the tracks,” White said. “She took her baby and began knocking on neighbors’ doors, saying someone was after her. We believe she was having a mental episode.”
The mother is now under observation. The Department of Children and Families is finding relatives with whom to place the infant.
This is the second time in three days that a Brightline train hit a vehicle in Palm Beach County. ‘
A man died Sunday when the high-speed train, with stops in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, hit his car in Lake Worth Beach.
