South Florida

Miami saw a freezing weekend as iguanas fell. How cold did it get? And what’s next?

You know it’s cold when iguanas fall from the sky. And this past weekend in South Florida, plenty did, with freezing temperatures that haven’t been felt in more than a decade.

People found cold-stunned iguanas that had tumbled from trees and onto their pool decks, patios and yards. And while Monday was not as chilly, people still woke up to a frost advisory from the National Weather Service.

Early morning temperatures dipped into the 40s, but warmed up by afternoon to around 70 across South Florida.

The rest of the week is looking warmer, too.

But first, how cold did it get Sunday morning?

Here’s what the National Weather Service says:

How cold it got in South Florida

In Miami-Dade, a chilly 36 degrees was recorded in the Redland.

In Broward County, the lowest it got was 37 degrees in Weston, Miramar and the South Broward area.

Palm Beach County saw a low of 35 in Loxahatchee, where Lion Country Safari is located.

In the Florida Keys, the coldest it got was 42 degrees in Key Largo.

How cold it got in other parts of Florida

In the Tampa Bay area, it varied. Tampa Executive Airport recorded a low of 30, Tampa International Airport saw 36 degrees, with some interior areas seeing lows in the mid-20s.

Tallahassee recorded a frigid 19 degrees.

That’s cold.

Will it get warmer in Miami-Dade, Broward and the Keys?

Good news: The warming trend Monday afternoon will stick around for a while.

On Tuesday, expect a high of 75 with a low of 62 in Miami-Dade, according to the weather service. The rest of the week in Miami-Dade and Broward is forecast to be warmer, too, with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Temperatures will drop into the mid- to high 60s at night.

What about in the Florida Keys?

“This week should be a nice one as we begin to warm back to near-normal temperatures,” the weather service in Key West wrote on Twitter. Expect highs near 80, with lows in the 70s.

There’s also a low 10% chance of rain in the Keys this week, with a 20% chance on Wednesday.
