Trapped woman rescued, taken to hospital after medical van crash in Miami, cops say

An elderly woman was taken to the hospital early Friday after the medical van she was in rolled over during a crash in Miami, police said. The woman, who uses a wheelchair, was trapped inside.

The 2018 white Ford medical transport van rolled over after colliding with a white 2017 Nissan Rouge at the intersection of Northwest Third Court and Sixth Street near Interstate 95 shortly after 7:15 a.m., according to Miami police. The area is only a few minutes away from the Miami Police Department.

Based on the investigation, it appears that one of the two drivers ran the red light and crashed into the other vehicle, said Miami police spokeswoman Kenia Fallat. Traffic Homicide detectives are still working to determine which driver ran the red light, she said.

Miami Fire Rescue was eventually able to free the trapped woman and took her to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where she remains in “serious but stable condition,” said Fallat. The woman’s name and exact age have not been disclosed.

“She had some minor injuries and the medical staff at Jackson Memorial Hospital continues to observe her,” Fallat said.

The driver of the van was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to police. The SUV driver was not injured and remained at the crash.

Police shut down the southbound streets between Northwest Fifth to Seventh Street on Northwest Third Court for more than three hours during the incident. The roads reopened shortly before 10:30 a.m.
