1 dead after car crashes into Miami’s historic Lyric Theater, cops say
A man has died after his car crashed into the historic Lyric Theater in Miami, police said.
The single-car crash happened early Thursday at the theater, 819 N.W. 2nd Ave. in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. Helicopter video taken by WSVN shows the car with front end damage.
The theater, built in 1913 by black tycoon Geder Walker, is considered to be Miami’s oldest entertainment venue. A Miami Herald article published in Feb. 6, 2014 described the theater as a symbol of the “time when Overtown was a bustling cultural hub: Jazz icon Duke Ellington thrilled audiences on its stage; poet Langston Hughes recited there; soul songstress Aretha Franklin charmed concert-goers with her gospel tunes.”
Police told Local 10 that the man experienced a medical emergency and lost control of his car. He was then taken to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Police closed the road between Northwest Eighth Street and Ninth Street in both directions for several hours for the investigation and clean-up. The roads reopened at 9:16 a.m.
