There can’t be a gathering to remember the Holocaust, but films and programs are streaming

In any other year, hundreds of people would gather at the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach for the annual program to mark Yom Hashoa, Holocaust Remembrance Day.

But with Covid-19 concerns, organizers looked for other ways to mark the somber day — which starts Monday evening and goes through Tuesday — that commemorates the 6 million Jews lost in the Holocaust.

So this year, the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach, Greater Miami Jewish Federation, Miami Jewish Film Festival and Center for the Advancement of Jewish Education teamed up to offer a day of streaming free Holocaust films on Sunday.

Among the films available: Inside Hana’s Suitcase,” a 93-minute film based on a book about two in pre-World War II Czechoslovakia, and “La Rafle,” a 125-minute film that looks at France’s Vél d’ Hiv Roundup.

The films can be accessed Sunday at https://jewishmiami.org/yomhashoah2020.

“The tag line we are using, ‘While we are apart, we can remember together,’ says it all,” said Jacob Solomon, the president of Greater Miami Jewish Federation. “We are finding creative ways to engage in rituals during this difficult time.”

Other Yom Hashoa events:

At 1 p.m. Monday, Yad Vashem, The World Holocaust Remembrance Center in Jerusalem, will broadcast its Yom Hashoa program at https://www.yadvashem.org. The ceremony will include messages from Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The film, “My Survivor,” which explores the intergenerational relationships between survivors and University of Miami students, will have its broadcast premiere at 9 p.m. Monday on WPBT 2.

On Tuesday, Yad Vashem is asking the public to participate in an international campaign to recite the names of Holocaust victims. Anyone can record themselves reciting the name and then share the video on social media using the hashtags #RememberingFromHome and #ShoahNames. A list of names is available at https://www.yadvashem.org/downloads/name-reading-ceremonies.html.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum will have a virtual commemoration at 11 a.m. Tuesday to honor the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. The ceremony will be simulcast on Facebook and YouTube.
