El Nuevo Herald reporter Brenda Medina and Univisión 23 correspondent Erika Carrillo are among finalists for the prestigious regional Emmy Award.

The two journalists collaborated on a multiple-part investigative series, Condo Nightmare, which uncovered fraud and abuse at some Miami-Dade and Broward condominium associations.

The series prompted reforms in Florida laws that regulate condominiums, including adding criminal penalties for certain actions, such as electoral fraud in associations and manipulation of information.

Other members of the production team for the series include Armando Pico, Juan Camilo Gómez and Joaquín González.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony in Orlando on Dec. 2.

“Through this series we were able to demonstrate how the courts do not always assign the most qualified person to defend and protect the interests of the people,” Medina said. “Beyond the nominations and awards, we hope that our work will contribute to improving and correcting the justice system so that cases like these will not be repeated.”
