Are Publix, Walmart, Chipotle, others impacted by lettuce recall? What they say

On Friday, the produce supplier Taylor Farms recalled its iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico following a federal investigation that linked some of its produce to the growing cyclosporiasis outbreak.

Many places sell Taylor Farms produce, including Publix, Whole Foods, Winn-Dixie, Fresco y Más, The Fresh Market, Walmart, Target, Sprouts Farmers Market and Dollar General, according to Taylor Farms’ website. Food delivery apps list Taylor Farms products available at Costco, Milam’s Markets, Aldi, Sedano’s and even gas stations like Wawa, 7-Eleven and Speedway. The company is also a supplier for restaurants and fast-food chains like Taco Bell, Chipotle and McDonald’s.

The Miami Herald is contacting local supermarkets and retailers to learn more.

Taylor Farms said that none of its packaged salads or salad kits are associated with the outbreak and that none of its salad kits use iceberg lettuce.

Taco Bell

Federal health officials and regulators confirmed that shredded iceberg lettuce sent to certain Taco Bell locations from Taylor Farms was linked to the outbreak that has sickened thousands of people.

But as of Friday evening, Taco Bell said it had removed “all affected Taylor Farms lettuce” from its restaurants.

Publix

Publix’s director of communications, Maria Brous, responded: “Currently, public health officials have identified iceberg lettuce from a specific farm in central Mexico as a possible source of illnesses under investigation. Publix does not sell nor source iceberg lettuce from this region.”

“We prioritize and value food safety and will continue to monitor and update information from public health officials and industry partners.”

Walmart

Walmart said in an email it was “working with our suppliers as the cyclospora investigations continue and are monitoring any developments closely.” The big-box retailer did not say whether the recalled lettuce was on its shelves.

“The health and safety of our customers is a top priority,” the company said. “ ... Anyone experiencing symptoms is encouraged to contact their healthcare provider.”

Winn-Dixie

“Winn-Dixie’s limited selection of Taylor Farms’ products is not recalled at this time,” said the company’s senior director of communications and community, Meredith Hurley.

Chipotle

Laurie Schalow, chief corporate affairs and food safety officer for Chipotle, said the restaurant doesn’t use shredded iceberg lettuce. “Our romaine lettuce and Supergreens salad mix are not sourced from Mexico and at this time, we don’t believe our ingredients are associated with this outbreak,” she said.

“The health and safety of our guests and team members remains our highest priority. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and evaluate any new information as it becomes available.”

Fresh Market

Fresh Market said it was not impacted by the recall. “Based on information provided by our supplier, none of our stores, including those in South Florida, received any of the affected iceberg lettuce products. As a result, there are no impacted products for our guests to identify or dispose of,” the grocery store said.

“The safety and quality of the products we offer our guests is always our highest priority. We continue to monitor information from our suppliers and regulatory agencies and will take appropriate action if needed.”

Wawa

A spokesperson told the Herald: “Wawa confirmed with our supplier that we do not have the removed product in any of our stores.”
