Calling it a “historic move,” Broward County’s two public health care systems plan to develop creative ways to work together — instead of competing with each other — to serve millions of patients.

The boards of South and North Broward Hospital Districts met jointly Monday night for the first time in their history. They voted independently to direct their CEOs to put together work groups that will bring ideas forward for partnerships.

The two systems already have begun conversations on a partnership for a new hospital in Sunrise, and Broward Health has hired Memorial Healthcare System to consult on information technology and electronic health records. Baptist Health South Florida, which operates 11 hospitals in Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach counties, also has an interest in opening a hospital in Broward County.
