An eye surgery mistake cost a Fort Myers doctor over $6,500 in fines and fees, according to State of Florida Board of Medicine paperwork posted online.
Ira Perszyk has been licensed in Florida since July 2019. The Florida Department of Health’s administrative complaint says on Nov. 22, 2019, a 91-year-old man identified as “V.P.” came to Perszyk for Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), a laser surgery usually used to treat glaucoma.
“[Perszyk] documented the intent to perform the SLT on the left eye,” the complaint says. “The Registered Nurse prepped the left eye with a drop of Altacaine 0.5% and performed a time out. [Perszyk] performed the SLT on the right eye.”
The complaint didn’t describe any further problems with V.P.’s eyes.
Perszyk will pay a $4,000 administrative fine; $2,526.06 to reimburse the investigation and prosecution costs; take a three and a half hour continuing medical education course in wrong-site surgery; and either take a five-hour continuing medical education course in risk management or sit through at least an eight-hour day of Board of Medicine disciplinary hearings.
There also will be a letter of reprimand against Perszyk’s Florida license, which he’s had since July 2019.
