Hair loss drug recalled for ingredient that can put users ‘at risk for heart failure’
Customer complaints, 33 of them, caused MasterPharm to recall one lot of hair loss drug Finasteride Plus that contains too much minoxidil, better known by the brand name Rogaine.
Not only is minoxidil not listed among the ingredients, it’s also an antihypertensive drug. That means it can treat high blood pressure. But the amount found in one lot of Finasteride Plus 1.25mg capsules exceeded the amount found in FDA-approved products.
“Consumption of undeclared minoxidil would be expected to result in low blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, and salt and water retention causing swelling,” the company-written, FDA-posted recall notice states. “Consequently, patients may be at risk for developing heart failure or other heart damage.”
And, the notice notes, “MasterPharm has received 33 reports of increased heart rate, retention of water, dizziness and low blood pressure.”
The affected lot has “02-27-2020:04@11” on the bottle and a Beyond Use date of Aug. 25, 2020. The capsules come in orange prescription bottles with 30 capsules or blue prescription bottles with 90 capsules.
