A 32-year-old mother of two from Antigua who traveled to South Florida for cosmetic surgery at a Miami office clinic in March died from fat clots in her lungs associated with liposuction, the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s office reported on Thursday.

Nikisha Lewis is one of at least six patients who have died within the past year following liposuction and fat transfer procedures at Miami office surgery clinics.

Lewis was undergoing a liposuction procedure in March at Spectrum Aesthetics Center for Cosmetic Surgery at 51 Southwest 42nd Avenue when she stopped breathing during the surgery. Lewis was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where she later died.

Kubs Lalchandani, an attorney for Spectrum Aesthetics, said in a written statement that the clinic is “deeply committed” to patient safety.

“Its medical professionals are in the process of reviewing the Medical Examiner’s report,” he said.

Rami Ghurani, the surgeon who performed liposuction on Lewis, declined to comment on Thursday. His attorney, Julia Ingle, said she wanted to review the medical examiner’s report before commenting.

According to Ghurani’s medical license profile maintained by the Florida Department of Health, he is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Ghurani has chosen not to carry medical malpractice insurance but agreed to satisfy any judgments against him up to the statutory limit of $250,000.

Lewis’s death is part of a group of patients, all women from out of state or out of the country, who have died after undergoing cosmetic surgery at an office clinic in South Florida.

The most recent death occurred on June 1 at a Doral office surgery clinic called Seduction by Jardon Medical Center, where a 30-year-old mother of six from Illinois died after undergoing liposuction and fat transfer procedures.
