Florida COVID update: Where cases, death tolls, hospitalizations stand at week’s end

Florida on Friday reported 9,790 COVID-19 cases and four new deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

In the past seven days, the state has added 189 deaths and 17,485 cases per day, on average, according to Herald calculations. Florida has recorded a total of at least 5,732,856 confirmed COVID cases and 67,326 deaths.

Here’s a breakdown of how many new COVID-19 cases were reported this past week in South Florida and Manatee County. The Florida Department of Health includes county resident case totals in its weekly coronavirus report, which is released on Friday.

Miami-Dade County reported 24,188 new resident cases in the week ending Feb. 10, according to Herald calculations of the state’s weekly report. The county’s resident case total stands at 1,161,882.

New infections rose by 49%, after falling by 30% the week before (Jan. 28-Feb. 3). The county had seen four weeks of declining new infections before this latest increase.

Broward County reported 10,276 new resident cases in the week ending Feb. 10, according to Herald calculations of the weekly report. The county’s resident case total stands at 591,382.

New infections increased by 32%, after falling by 35% the week before (Jan. 28-Feb. 3). Like Dade, Broward had seen four weeks of declining new infections before this rise.

Palm Beach County reported 5,617 new resident cases in the week ending Feb. 10, according to Herald calculations of the weekly report. The county’s resident case total stands at 359,416.

New infections fell by 2%, after falling by 34% the week before (Jan. 28-Feb. 3).

Monroe County reported 283 new resident cases in the week ending Feb. 10, according to Herald calculations of the weekly report. The county’s resident case total stands at 17,653.

New infections rose by 1%, after falling by 44% the week before (Jan. 28-Feb. 3).

Manatee County reported 2,235 new resident cases in the week ending Feb. 10, according to Herald calculations of the weekly report. The county’s resident case total stands at 93,069.

New infections fell by 23%, same as the week before (Jan. 4-Feb. 3).

FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES

About 14,066,377 eligible Floridians — 65.5% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, MANATEE COUNTY

Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC:

In Miami-Dade County, about 2,251,671 people, or 82.9% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.

In Broward County, about 1,364,236 people are fully vaccinated, or 69.9% of the county’s population.

In Palm Beach County, about 972,842 people are fully vaccinated, or 65% of the county’s population.

In Monroe County, about 56,985 people are fully vaccinated, or 76.8% of the county’s population.

In Manatee County, about 244,066 people are fully vaccinated, or 60.5% of the county’s population.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida

There were 6,301 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report on Friday. This data is reported from 259 Florida hospitals. The number of people hospitalized across the state is 440 fewer than the day prior, when 258 hospitals reported.

COVID-19 patients take up 10.60% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 11.39% among the previous day’s reporting hospitals.

Hospitalizations during omicron’s wave have not approached records set amid delta’s surge last summer. At delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 patients were hospitalized across the state, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 993 were in intensive-care units, a decrease of 52 from Thursday. That represents about 15.42% of the state’s ICU beds, compared to 16.17% the previous day.

Friday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 382 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Thursday, a decrease of 72 from the previous day. Of the 56 new COVID patients, 44 (78.57%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 81, decreased by 27 from a day earlier.

Broward County’s Friday report said there were 405 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, an increase of two compared to the day before.
