Florida COVID update: The latest on cases, deaths and hospitalizations
Florida on Monday reported 51,356 COVID-19 cases and 456 new deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.
The CDC backlogs cases and deaths for Florida on Mondays and Thursdays, when multiple days in the past have their totals changed. In August, Florida began reporting cases and deaths by the “case date” and “death date” rather than the date they were logged into the system.
Of the deaths added, about 81% occurred in the last two weeks, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.
In the past seven days, the state has added 171 deaths and 20,736 cases per day, on average. Florida has recorded a total of at least 5,680,958 confirmed COVID cases and 66,463 deaths.
FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES
About 14,038,520 eligible Floridians — 65.4% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, MANATEE COUNTY
Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, per the CDC:
▪ In Miami-Dade County, about 2,246,972 people, or 82.7% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.
▪ In Broward County, about 1,361,300 people are fully vaccinated, or 69.7% of the county’s population.
▪ In Palm Beach County, about 970,814 people are fully vaccinated, or 64.9% of the county’s population.
▪ In Monroe County, about 56,896 people are fully vaccinated, or 76.7% of the county’s population.
▪ In Manatee County, about 243,734 people are fully vaccinated, or 60.4% of the county’s population.
COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida
There were 7,316 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services report on Monday. This data is reported from 258 Florida hospitals. The number of people hospitalized across the state is 96 less than the day prior, when 261 hospitals reported.
COVID-19 patients take up 12.75% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 12.77% among the previous day’s reporting hospitals.
Hospitalizations during omicron’s wave have not approached records set during delta’s surge last summer. At delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 patients were hospitalized across the state, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 1,174 were in intensive-care units, an increase of six from Sunday. That represents about 18.65% of the state’s ICU beds, compared to 18.25% the previous day.
Monday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 620 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Sunday, an increase of 137 from the previous day. Of the 57 new COVID patients, 42 (73.68%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 294, increasing by 40 from a day earlier.
Broward County’s Thursday report said there were 461 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, a decrease of 18 compared to the day before.
