Florida COVID update: New death tolls in your county as 1,100 more in the hospital
Florida reported 47,709 COVID-19 cases and three new deaths Monday, according to Tuesday’s report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.
In all, Florida has recorded at least 4,806,782 confirmed COVID cases and 62,813 deaths.
In the past seven days, as the omicron version of the virus circulates, the state has added 39 deaths and 63,801 cases per day on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data.
COVID deaths in South Florida and Manatee County
The CDC’s Community Profile Report released county-level death data for Florida’s 67 counties.
It is unclear when these newly reported deaths occurred. The Community Profile Report updates Florida’s county tolls and rates about once every seven days, when or after the COVID-19 weekly situation report is published by the Florida Department of Health on Fridays.
As of Friday’s Community Profile Report, Florida had a rate of 292 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the start of the pandemic. Two weeks ago, the state had a rate of 290 deaths per 100,000 people.
Here’s where death rates and tolls stand in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.
▪ Miami-Dade County’s death toll is 9,314, an increase of 36 deaths from Thursday’s report. That’s a rate of 343 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
▪ Broward County’s death toll sits at 5,006, an increase of 14 deaths. That’s a rate of 256 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
▪ Palm Beach County’s death toll sits at 4,338, an increase of nine deaths. That’s a rate of 290 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
▪ Monroe County’s death toll remains at 101, an increase of one death. The county would be at a death rate of 136 deaths per 100,000 people if its population were that large.
▪ Manatee County’s death toll sits at 1,230, an increase of one. Manatee has a rate of 305 cumulative deaths per 100,000 people since the beginning of the pandemic.
FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES
About 13,723,349 eligible Floridians — 63.9% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA, MANATEE COUNTY
Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC:
▪ In Miami-Dade County, about 2,205,210 people, or 81.2% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.
▪ In Broward County, about 1,334,041 people are fully vaccinated, or 68.3% of the county’s population.
▪ In Palm Beach County, about 955,381 people are fully vaccinated, or 63.8% of the county’s population.
▪ In Monroe County, about 55,783 people are fully vaccinated, or 75.2% of the county’s population.
▪ In Manatee County, about 239,615 people are fully vaccinated, or 59.4% of the county’s population.
COVID-19 Hospitalizations in Florida
There were 11,078 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Tuesday report. This data is reported from 236 Florida hospitals. The number of people hospitalized across the state is 1,190 more than the day prior, when 262 hospitals reported.
COVID-19 patients take up 19.96% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 17.25% among Monday’s reporting hospitals.
Omicron, so far, is not as deadly as delta’s surge last summer. Hospitalizations have not approached records set during delta’s wave from July through September.
At delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 patients were hospitalized in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 1,367 were in intensive-care units, an increase of 209 from Monday. That represents about 21.69% of the state’s ICU beds, compared to 19.48% the previous day.
Tuesday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 2,376 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Sunday, an increase of 321 from the previous day. Of the 371 new COVID patients, 279 (75.20%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 328, increased by 55 from a day earlier.
Broward County’s Tuesday report said there were 1,380 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, an increase of 20 patients compared to the day before.
