Florida COVID update: Hospitalizations up by 210 in the state, still under delta peak

There were 5,425 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Sunday report of data from 259 hospitals. That’s 210 more than Saturday’s report from 260 hospitals.

Patients with COVID-19 take up 9.55% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 9.20 % among Saturday’s reporting hospitals.

Of the people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Florida, 585 were in intensive-care units, an increase of 30 from Friday’s report. That represents about 9.37% of the state’s ICU beds, compared to 8.92% the previous day.

The omicron variant, so far, has not been as deadly as the delta variant surge last summer nor are hospitalizations approaching the records set during that July through September wave. At delta’s August peak, more than 15,000 patients were hospitalized in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Also, people admitted to hospitals for other reasons are tested for COVID and counted as COVID patients if they test positive.
