Florida COVID update: 8,709 new cases added to state tally as hospital patients decrease

Florida reported 8,709 COVID-19 cases and one new death on Friday, according to Saturday’s report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,748,148 confirmed COVID cases and 62,193 deaths.

In the past seven days, the state has added 27 deaths and 4,991 cases per day on average, according to Herald calculations of CDC data.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida

There were 1,514 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Saturday report. This data is reported from 262 Florida hospitals. That is 22 fewer people than in Friday’s report, when 257 hospitals reported.

COVID-19 patients take up 2.56% of all in-patient beds in the latest report’s hospitals, compared to 2.60% in the previous day’s reporting hospitals.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 299 were in intensive care unit beds, an increase of 19. That represents about 4.77% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 4.49% the previous day.
