Florida COVID update: 1,217 cases added and hospitals see decrease in patients

Florida reported 1,217 COVID-19 cases and 277 deaths on Thursday, according to Friday’s report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.

In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,668,075 confirmed COVID cases and 60,697 deaths.

Of the deaths added Friday, about 75% occurred over the past 28 days and about 44% in the last two weeks, according to Herald calculations of CDC data.

In the past seven days, on average, the state has added 71 deaths and 1,490 cases per day, according to Herald calculations of CDC data.

FLORIDA COVID VACCINE RATES

About 12,968,507 eligible people in Florida — 60.4% of the state’s population — have completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines or have completed Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

VACCINATIONS IN SOUTH FLORIDA AND MANATEE COUNTY

Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.

In Miami-Dade County, about 2,083,625 people, or 76.7% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.

In Broward County, about 1,254,298 people are fully vaccinated, or 64.2% of the county’s population.

In Palm Beach County, about 908,259 people are fully vaccinated, or 60.7% of the county’s population.

In Monroe County, about 52,625 people are fully vaccinated, or 70.9% of the county’s population.

In Manatee County, about 227,975 people are fully vaccinated, or 56.5% of the county’s population.

COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida

There were 1,466 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to a Friday report by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, which compiled data from 260 Florida hospitals. Hospitalized COVID patients decreased by 61 from Thursday’s report, when 259 hospitals submitted data.

COVID-19 patients took up 2.53% of all inpatient beds in the latest report’s hospitals, compared to 2.63% in the previous day’s reporting hospitals.

Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 317 people were in intensive care unit beds, a decrease of 12. That represents about 5.31% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 5.65% the previous day.

Friday’s Miami-Dade County report did not include hospitalization information.

Broward County’s Friday report said there were 213 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, an increase of 69 from Wednesday’s report.
