Florida COVID update: 887 more deaths added to toll, with most dying in last month
Florida on Tuesday reported 887 more deaths and 2,124 additional COVID-19 cases to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.
All but 144 of the newly reported deaths — about 84% — occurred since Sept. 14, according to the Herald analysis. About 44% of the newly reported died in the past two weeks, the analysis showed.
In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,611,767 confirmed COVID cases and 57,300 deaths.
In the past seven days, the state has added, on average, 240 deaths and 3,052 cases per day, according to Herald calculations of CDC data.
Florida COVID-19 Vaccine Rate
About 12,545,800 eligible Floridians — 58.4% of the state’s population — had completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, or received Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vaccinations in South Florida and Manatee County
The CDC reported that every Florida county’s level of community transmission remains high. Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida and Manatee County, according to the CDC.
▪ In Miami-Dade County, about 2,004,063 people, or 73.8% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.
▪ In Broward County, about 1,213,874 people are fully vaccinated, or 62.2% of the county’s population.
▪ In Palm Beach County, about 883,181 people are fully vaccinated, or 59% of the county’s population.
▪ In Monroe County, about 50,940 people are fully vaccinated, or 68.6% of the county’s population.
▪ In Manatee County, about 219,579 people are fully vaccinated, or 54.5% of the county’s population.
COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida
There were 3,593 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to a Tuesday report by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, which compiled data from 234 Florida hospitals. The number of hospitalized COVID patients dropped by 352 from Saturday’s report, when 259 hospitals submitted data. This continues a trend of decreasing hospitalizations.
COVID-19 patients take up 6.63% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 6.78% in Saturday’s report.
Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 977 people were in intensive care unit beds, a decrease of 169 from Saturday. That represents about 15.47% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 17.05%.
Tuesday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 332 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Monday, a decrease of 31 from the previous day’s report. Of the 38 new COVID patients, 30 (78.95%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 97, a decrease of 20 from the previous day.
