Florida COVID update: 3,974 cases added to state toll, fewer patients in hospitals
Florida on Friday reported 3,974 more COVID-19 cases and three deaths to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Miami Herald calculations of CDC data.
In all, Florida has recorded at least 3,601,705 confirmed COVID cases and 56,410 deaths since the pandemic began.
In the past seven days, the state has added, on average, 200 deaths and 3,589 cases per day, according to Herald calculations of CDC data.
Florida COVID-19 Vaccine Rate
About 12,485,973 eligible Floridians — 58.1% of the state’s population — had completed the two-dose series of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccines, or received Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Vaccinations in South Florida and Manatee County
The CDC reported that every Florida county’s level of community transmission remains high. Here’s how many people have been fully vaccinated in South Florida, according to the CDC.
▪ In Miami-Dade County, about 1,994,413 people, or 73.4% of the county’s total population, are fully vaccinated.
▪ In Broward County, about 1,207,961 people are fully vaccinated, or 61.9% of the county’s population.
▪ In Palm Beach County, about 879,149 people are fully vaccinated, or 58.7% of the county’s population.
▪ In Monroe County, about 50,751 people are fully vaccinated, or 68.4% of the county’s population.
▪ In Manatee County, about 218,431 people are fully vaccinated, or 54.2% of the county’s population.
COVID-19 hospitalizations in Florida
There were 4,240 people hospitalized for COVID-19 in Florida, according to a Friday report by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, which compiled data from 257 Florida hospitals. The number of hospitalized COVID patients dropped by 169 from Thursday’s report, when only 256 hospitals submitted data. This continues a trend of decreasing hospitalizations.
COVID-19 patients take up 7.40% of all inpatient beds in the latest report, compared to 7.71% in the previous day’s report.
Of the people hospitalized in Florida, 1,146 people were in intensive care unit beds, a decrease of 37. That represents about 17.35% of the state’s ICU hospital beds, compared to 17.82% the previous day.
Friday’s Miami-Dade County report said there were 276 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals on Thursday, a decrease of 105 from the previous day’s report. Of the 21 new COVID patients, 15 (71.43%) had not been vaccinated. Intensive care patients numbered 88, a decrease of 41 from the previous day.
Broward County’s Friday report said there were 395 COVID patients in the county’s hospitals, a decrease of 28 from Thursday’s patient population.
