Miami-Dade’s going to Phase 2 could have school doors opening this month

3:15 p.m.: Miami-Dade and Broward counties will enter into Phase 2 on Monday, the next step toward reopening schools for in-person learning.

Pointing to coronavirus data heading in the right direction, Gov. Ron DeSantis, along with Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, made the announcement Friday at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science in Miami.

That meant that schools could open for in-person learning this month, if those trends continue, Carvalho said. He added that the district’s eight criteria for reopening schools are currently being met.

Florida adds 3,650 coronavirus cases, and more than 170 new deaths push toll past 12,500

1:45 p.m.: Florida’s Department of Health on Friday confirmed 3,650 additional cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s known total to 658,381. There were also 176 Florida resident deaths announced, bringing the resident death toll to 12,502.

Friday’s single day count of newly confirmed cases is the most Florida has reported since Saturday’s 3,656 cases.

University of Miami makes COVID-19 tests a requirement for students on campus

12:40 p.m.: The University of Miami has added a new requirement of its on-campus students.

Get a COVID-19 test every two weeks for the remainder of the fall semester.

It’s not a request. It’s a requirement.

UM alerted its students and faculty that in an “adaptive response to the coronavirus pandemic, and as an added safeguard for our community,” the university is expanding its COVID-19 testing.

Florida lets bars start COVID-19 comeback at 50% capacity. Miami-Dade says not yet

10 a.m.: The state will allow bars to reopen at 50% capacity starting Monday, Florida’s top business regulator announced via Twitter Thursday evening. But that’s not going to apply in Miami-Dade County.

Jennifer Moon, the Miami-Dade County deputy mayor overseeing emergency orders, said the county wouldn’t be adding bars to Monday’s planned lifting of bans on rental scooters, outdoor amusement parks and tour boats. “No bars,” she said.
