Florida adds 3,198 new COVID-19 cases and 100 deaths as numbers fall across the state
The Florida Department of Health on Friday added 3,198 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 100 resident deaths. The numbers are down from Thursday in South Florida and across the state.
The number of non-resident deaths increased by three to 153.
Florida’s pandemic totals are 640,211 cases and 11,750 deaths.
South Florida counties
▪ Miami-Dade added 491 confirmed cases and 32 deaths, bringing its pandemic totals to 160,469 and 2,632, respectively. Both figures dropped by 87 and 14, respectively, compared to Thursday. The daily positivity rate was 5.95%, lower than Thursday’s 7.35%, the 17th consecutive day of a goal of under 10%, as stated on Miami-Dade’s New Normal Dashboard.
▪ Broward’s 246 new confirmed cases moved its pandemic total to 72,880. Six more deaths moved that total to 1,212. This represents 17 fewer daily cases than Thursday and three fewer deaths. The daily positivity rate was 4.29%, lower than Thursday’s 4.72%, continuing a trend of 10 days under 5%.
▪ Palm Beach County’s 119 new confirmed cases, six fewer than Thursday’s daily, mean 42,762 have caught COVID-19 in Palm Beach. Of those people, 1,160 have died, including the 10 reported Friday — six fewer than on Thursday. Daily positivity was 3.60%, down from Thursday’s 4.37%.
▪ Monroe County had one new confirmed case and no deaths, bringing its total to 1,754 and holding at 16 deaths. Daily positivity rate was 4.30%, a bit up from Thursday’s 4.08%.
Current hospitalizations
As of the 10 a.m. Friday report from the state’s Agency for Health Care Administration, 3,358 people were currently hospitalized with a primary diagnosis of COVID-19, a reduction of 55 people from Wednesday morning.
The South Florida counties’ trends went down compared to 11:30 a.m. Thursday. On Friday, the agency updates the figures throughout the day. Miami-Dade went down 11 to 616; Broward down three, to 387; Palm Beach down 19 to 194; Monroe down two to one.
Florida’s current hospitalization data does not always match the hospitalization data reported in Miami-Dade’s New Normal dashboard. Officials say this could be for a number of reasons including the frequency of daily updates.
Miami-Dade had 709 people in the county hospitalized primarily because of COVID-19, a drop from Thursday’s 718 and the 16th drop in just over two weeks. The county reports 78 new COVID patients were admitted to hospitals and 87 were discharged.
Testing
Testing, like hospitalizations, helps officials determine the virus’ progress and plays a role in deciding whether it is safe to lift stay-at-home orders and loosen restrictions. Miami-Dade allowed indoor dining and casinos to reopen Monday — with restrictions.
Friday, the state reported a daily positivity rate of 5.10%. Through the pandemic, 4,747,072 residents and non-residents have been tested in Florida and bumped from 13.48% to a 13.49% positive test rate in Friday’s report.
