Worried about being evicted? DeSantis extends evictions, foreclosures order for fifth time
If you have been struggling to pay rent or a mortgage because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Ron DeSantis is giving you a little more time.
Only hours before an executive order suspending COVID-related evictions and mortgage foreclosures was set to expire, DeSantis for the fifth time extended the order. It will now expire at 12:01 a.m. Oct. 1 instead of 12:01 a.m. Sept. 1.
In April, DeSantis issued the original order that prevented foreclosures and evictions related to COVID-19. He has amended the order several times since.
While evictions or foreclosures can be started, the order halts any final action in cases stemming from people affected by the COVID-19 emergency. The order applies only to residential tenants; it does not apply to commercial evictions.
The extension comes on the same day that Florida reported the fewest number of COVID-19 cases since June 15. The state added 1,885 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, the Florida Department of Health reported, bringing the state’s total number of cases to 623,471 and 11,331 deaths.
