‘We have to find a balance.’ COVID curfew expires in Broward, remains in Miami-Dade.
With the state reporting its lowest daily total of newly confirmed cases in over a month, Broward allowed its curfew to expire at 5 a.m. Monday.
“We are going to watch to see what happens with testing to see if we stay level,” said Broward Mayor Dale Holness. “We have to find a balance with restricting people’s rights to movement and controlling this virus.”
Last week, the county’s administrator, Bertha Henry, extended the curfew — which was instituted on July 17 — until Monday.
No other restrictions, including an order that restaurants must stop serving at 10 p.m., have been lifted.
“We have to maintain the vigilance and follow the guidelines of the CDC,” Holness said. “We are seeing some signs of slight decrease, but we can’t let down our guard.”
On Monday, there were 4,752 additional cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s known total to 491,884. The state has seen a total of 7,157 deaths. In Broward, there have been 58,531 known cases and 748 deaths.
Holness said county officials will monitor the numbers closely and will reinstate the curfew if necessary.
Meanwhile, Miami-Dade’s daily 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew is still in effect.
