More COVID-19 means Broward joins Miami-Dade in closing its beaches for July 4 weekend
Miami-Dade residents thinking they would head up to Hollywood or Fort Lauderdale beaches for July 4 weekend can put away the floaties and coolers — Broward County beaches will be closed July 3 through July 5.
Sunday’s move by Broward mirrored Miami-Dade’s response to leaps in COVID-19 case numbers and positive test rates over the last week and a half. On Friday, Miami-Dade announced closures of beaches, parks, parties, parades and all manner of usual Independence Day celebration that would bring together more than 50 people.
Several mayors of Broward municipalities will discuss the beach closures at a 4:30 p.m. news conference Sunday.
As South Florida strode out of its homes into the reopening of beaches, restaurants and malls, it has stumbled over the regulations accompanying the re-emergence. Saturday, five Broward restaurants were cited and four were closed for violations of code guidelines, including no facial coverings.
