Nova Southeastern University is one of the first Florida colleges and universities to release plans on reopening its campus for the fall 2020 semester.

On May 1, NSU President Dr. George Hanbury announced that the university residence halls will be reopened and in-person classes will resume for the fall 2020 semester under its regular schedule.

Most programs will start in either July or August, subject to further executive orders by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. On March 13, NSU suspended all of its classes.

“Along with helping all NSU students to fulfill their academic dreams and aspirations, your health, well-being, and safety continue to be our top priorities,” Hanbury said in a statement. “NSU’s core values are foremost as we plan for this return to campus, which focuses on our diverse community of students, faculty and staff, and the provision of the appropriate learning environments that will be key to successful matriculation — but with careful attention to include special arrangements, choices, and support along the way.”

For the fall term, NSU’s fully online course offerings will remain online and hybrid courses will remain hybrid. The university said it is taking into account the use of physical distancing, facial coverings and other safety protocols for face-to-face classes and labs.

The university did say if a student does not want to attend a class in person, “the student will have a choice to attend this class via synchronous online delivery.”

The University of Florida, Florida International University, the University of Miami and Florida State University have yet to announce fall term reopening dates.

On May 1, UF Provost Joe Glover and Senior Vice President Charlie Lane told university employees that the Board of Trustees approved moving the first day of the fall semester from Aug. 24 to Aug. 31, the Independent Florida Alligator reported.

On April 30, FSU announced it would be releasing new campus plans based on DeSantis’ Phase 1 state reopening guidelines sometime on Friday or Saturday.

On April 27, FIU extended the cancellation of all on- and off-campus events to July 1 and allowed most of its faculty and staff to work remotely through May 30. The university also announced the creation of a “Campus Repopulating Taskforce”.
