Florida nears 16,000 coronavirus cases as death toll surpasses 300. South Florida virus hub

Florida neared 16,000 coronavirus cases as the state’s Department of Health confirmed an additional 242 cases Wednesday evening, bringing the state total to 15,698 cases. There were also 14 new deaths reported, raising the state death toll to 323.

Since Tuesday night, health officials reported 951 more cases and 27 deaths. Fifteen of the 27 deaths — or more than half — were from South Florida.

Three people in Miami-Dade County have died since Tuesday night: an 86-year-old man, a 78-year-old woman and another 86-year-old man.

Six people in Broward County have died since Tuesday night, including two women and four men between the ages of 30 and 88.

Five people died in Palm Beach County since Tuesday night, including three men and two women between the ages of 38 and 87.

A new death was reported in Monroe County, a 75-year-old man.

Of the total statewide confirmed cases, 15,234 are Florida residents and 464 are non-residents.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Florida?

As of Wednesday evening, here’s what Florida’s Department of Health data show:

Miami-Dade County saw 107 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, raising the county total to 5,461. Those who have fallen ill range from 0 to 103. (Those in the zero age range are newborns in their first year of life.) Health officials say 5,411 are residents, 49 are non-residents and one is a resident who is not in Florida. The county has had 50 deaths.

Broward County reported 68 additional confirmed cases, raising the county total of confirmed cases to 2,365. Those who have fallen ill range from 0 to 98. Health officials say 2,302 are residents and 63 are non-residents. The county has had 60 deaths.

Palm Beach County had 18 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19, raising the county total to 1,224. Those who have fallen ill range from 0 to 104. Health officials say 1,183 are residents, 39 are non-residents and two are residents who are not in Florida. The county has had 69 deaths, the state’s highest death toll.

Monroe County reported one additional confirmed case of the disease, bringing the county total to 52. Those who have fallen ill range from 19 to 80. Health officials say 46 are residents and six are non-residents. The Florida Keys has had three deaths.
