Florida passes 11,500 coronavirus cases, with nearly 200 deaths in the state
The Florida Health Department said Saturday evening the state now has 11,545 confirmed COVID-19 cases — a jump of 1,277 from the day before — and 195 deaths. That’s an increase of 25 deaths,
One of the deaths is that of Broward Sheriff Deputy Shannon Bennett, who was 39 when he succumbed to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. Including Bennett, Broward lost 10 more people since Friday night to bring its total to 32 deaths from the virus.
The Florida Department of Health’s COVID-19 Data and Survelliance Dashboard reported fewer cases in Broward Saturday evening than it did Saturday morning. The morning’s report showed 1,792 confirmed positives, 40 of which are non-residents. The evening report showed 1,765 total cases, with 43 being non-residents. It’s a glitch that has occurred before without explanation.
Six more people died in Miami-Dade since Friday night to bring its total to 31.
At 3,890 confirmed positive cases, Miami-Dade is now leading the state. Of that total, 3,846 are residents.
Palm Beach added two more deaths to make its total 35. The county has 954 confirmed cases and of that number 921 are residents.
Monroe had another death reported, bringing the death toll to two. The newest report was a 55-year-old man with “co-morbidities” who died at Lower Keys Medical Center. The first death was another 55-year-old man who’s friends and family identified as Keith White of Key West. The Florida Keys now have 42 confirmed cases and five of those are non-residents.
Keys officials instituted checkpoints to keep visitors from venturing onto the island chain.
Health officials say 1,470 people statewide have been hospitalized because of COVID-19 complications, a bump of 84.
The state’s total of 11,545 confirmed cases translates to a 10.8% positive rate of the 107,313 total tests undertaken.
Confirmed COVID-19 cases in South Florida
Here are Saturday evening’s numbers for South Florida:
▪ Miami-Dade: 3,890 total confirmed cases, 31 deaths and 243 hospitalizations. Patient age range is 0 to 103.
▪ Broward County: 1,792 total confirmed cases (as of Saturday morning), 32 deaths and 212 hospitalizations. Patient age range is 0 to 97.
▪ Palm Beach County: 954 total confirmed cases, 35 deaths and 149 hospitalizations. Patient age range is 0 to 99.
▪ Florida Keys: 42 total confirmed cases, two death and seven hospitalizations. Patient age range is 19 to 80.
Men lead women in the number of confirmed cases in South Florida.
In the Florida Keys, the cases are almost equally split between men and women, with men at 21 and women at 20 positives.
In Miami-Dade, 2,097 men tested positive compared to 1,738 women.
In Broward the numbers Saturday morning are 963 men and 780 women.
And in Palm Beach, 490 men tested positive compared to 455 women.
