A bus driver complained about coughing passenger. Weeks later, he died of coronavirus
Two weeks ago, a driver in Detroit complained on Facebook Live that a woman on his bus was coughing repeatedly without covering her mouth during the coronavirus pandemic.
Four days later, Jason Hargrove was quarantined with coronavirus, according to Fox 2 Detroit. The head of the drivers union, Glenn Tolbert, confirmed Hargrove died of coronavirus this week, the Associated Press reported.
“We out here as public workers doing our job, trying to make an honest living to take care of our families. But for you to get on a bus and stand on a bus and cough several times without covering up your mouth, and you know that we’re in the middle of a pandemic, that lets me know that some folks don’t care,” Hargrove said in the video. “I feel violated. I feel violated for the folks that were on the bus when this happened.”
There were eight or nine people on the bus when the woman was coughing, Hargrove said in the video. The coronavirus spreads through droplets that are produced when people cough or sneeze, according to the AP.
“This ain’t going to get any better before it gets worse, because people ain’t taking it seriously,” Hargrove said.
It’s unknown whether Hargrove’s illness is connected to the passenger, Fox 2 said.
The city of Detroit halted bus fares on March 17, promised to clean the buses more, and encouraged passengers to enter and exit from the back of the bus, AP reported. Mayor Mike Duggan told the AP that “everybody in America” should view Hargrove’s video.
“He was infected before we closed the front doors,” Duggan said. “Some of his language is graphic, but I don’t know how you can watch it and not tear up.”
