Norwegian Encore crew member who disembarked a week ago tests positive for COVID-19

Crew members still stuck aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Encore learned Tuesday that a fellow crew member who disembarked a week ago tested positive for COVID-19.

The cruise line shared the news in the form of a letter to each crew member.

“Because you were a crew member on the same voyage and subsequent voyages, it is possible that you [were] exposed to someone who was sick with COVID-19,” the cruise line said in the letter, which was provided to the Miami Herald by a crew member.

It is not clear how many crew members are still aboard the Encore, which on Tuesday night was moored three miles off of Miami Beach.

On March 15, the last of the Norwegian Encore passengers were offloaded at PortMiami. Crew members were told by the captain that no one on board had COVID-19 and were encouraged to socialize.

But crew members who spoke to the Miami Herald on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation said several people were sick and at least one person tested positive.

Tuesday’s letter to crew members comes two days after the Miami Herald’s story about an Encore crew member testing positive was published.

While the letter doesn’t give specifics about the crew member’s condition, workers were given advice for when they leave the ship and if they feel sick. Among the tips: Stay home and if you see a doctor “tell them about your recent cruise ship or river cruise travel.”
