A veteran who was a patient at the Miami VA has died from complications of COVID-19

A veteran in their 90s died at the Miami VA Healthcare System this week due to complications from COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

The veteran, who was not identified, is one of nine VA patients across the country who have died as of March 27 after testing positive for COVID-19.

The Miami VA has reported four veterans who have tested positive for COVID-19 to date, including one who is hospitalized and three who are recovering at home. The center reported its first positive patient on March 18.

Miami VA officials could not be reached Saturday morning and have not provided additional details about the veteran who died at the medical center on March 25.

Nationally, the VA is tracking 571 veterans who have tested positive for COVID-19. In Florida, there are 25 veterans receiving care at VA medical centers statewide, including the four in Miami, one in Bay Pines, five in Gainesville, 14 in Orlando and one in Tampa.

Veterans who are concerned they may have symptoms of COVID-19 (Coronavirus), flu or cold are encouraged to contact the VISN 8 Clinical Contact Center at 1-877-741-3400 (toll free).
