A Broward doctor is the first South Florida medical professional to die from COVID-19, reports say
A Margate internist who died Wednesday is reportedly the first South Florida medical professional to die from COVID-19.
Dr. Alex Hsu’s passing was mourned online by patients and peers, of which there were plenty from Hsu’s 35 years as a licensed doctor in Florida. Two peers stated in Facebook posts Hsu, 67, had caught the novel coronavirus, an assertion backed up by WSVN-Channel 7 and WPLG-Channel 10 reporting confirmation from a Broward medical examiner.
Hsu got his Florida license in December 1984, according to Florida Department of Health online records. He graduated from the University of Hawaii medical school in 1982 and did his residency at the University of Louisville before becoming licensed in Florida.
Though Hsu’s sharecare.com profile lists an affiliation with Northwest Medical Center, a spokesperson for the center said his patients should contact his office.
“Dr. Hsu, a well-respected member of the medical community, was an active medical staff member at Northwest Medical Center from 1995-2017,” a statement from Northwest Medical said. “He positively touched many of our patients’ lives throughout the years, and he will truly be missed. Our deepest condolences go out to his family.”
