Univision’s Miami news studio closed after employees test positive for coronavirus
Univision’s Doral news studio building was closed after at least two employees tested positive for the coronavirus, on-air reporters announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The building is now closed while news shows are being broadcast from homes and parking lots of Univision’s two studios in Doral. The affected building, 8551 NW 30th Terr., houses the local news and national news divisions.
Univision’s 4 p.m. network news broadcast was broadcast from outside Univision’s entertainment studio, 9405 NW 41st St. The 5 p.m. news magazine show Primer Impacto was also being broadcast, in part, from that parking lot.
In an internal email, Univision notified employees that the news headquarters will close “temporarily in order to provide intensive deep cleaning” of the infected person’s workstation.
“To implement additional safeguards, there will be additional security screenings at the entry points,” the email said.
In a statement, Univision said: “We are taking every precaution to maintain a safe working environment.”
Journalism companies across the United States have been grappling with how to cover the growing and unprecedented pandemic, while keeping their reporters and staff safe. Many reporters, editors and producers have retreated to their homes to work, although some staffers have still been needed at television studios to handle production.
The highly contagious virus, which causes the deadly COVID-19 illness, has stuck more than 1,600 people in Florida and caused at least 22 deaths.
