Sunny Isles Beach issues curfew, orders pools and gyms closed in all condos and hotels

Starting Sunday evening, residents of Sunny Isles Beach have a curfew.

Residents aren’t allowed to walk, drive or otherwise be outside between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless they’re walking a pet, going to or from work or working with police, fire or governmental services.

The city also upped its recommendations on pool and gym closures to an official order. That means hotels, condominiums and apartments must close shared pools and gyms in their buildings.

“We continue to receive reports of crowded pools and common areas in residents’ buildings. This puts our residents’ health and welfare in jeopardy, so now we are issuing this order for the well-being of our City and region,” the city wrote in an email announcing the official order.

Several other cities have issued similar curfews, like Miami Beach, North Miami Beach and Key Biscayne.

The official exemptions to the Sunny Isles curfew are:

  • Providing police, fire or other governmental services
  • Providing assistance expressly requested by police, fire or governmental personnel
  • Participating in, going to, or returning from a place of work or occupation
  • Walking a pet animal in the vicinity of their residence
