‘If I get corona, I get corona.’ Spring breakers coming to Miami-Dade have no fear
Spring breakers flocking to Miami-Dade fear nothing.
At least that’s what a new video from CBS News seemed to indicate.
“If I get corona, I get corona,” Brady Sluder of Ohio told Reuters. “At the end of the day, I’m not going to let it stop me from partying.”
The video, posted on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, has already racked up more than 20 million views. Although clearly rash, Sluder’s remarks were evidence of burgeoning nonchalance among many college-aged visitors to South Florida.
“I think they’re blowing it way out of proportion,” Brianna Leeder told CBS News, referencing the restaurant and beach closures.
“This virus ain’t that serious,” Atlantis Walker added. “There’s more serious things out there like hunger and poverty.”
Less than 24 hours after the video began circulating, Mayor Carlos Gimenez shut down all the beaches in Miami-Dade. The move reversed an earlier mandate that limited gatherings in parks to 10 or fewer people.
“You cannot have a party in a park,” Gimenez said in a video message broadcast.
The latest data from the Florida Department of Health brought the state’s total number of COVID-19 cases to 390. Roughly half of them — 182 — came from Miami-Dade and Broward counties as of Thursday afternoon. The combined number of cases in the two counties has risen nearly 200 percent since Monday.
