Six Broward COVID-19 patients said to be affiliated with Nova Southeastern University
Six of the 20 positive COVID-19 cases in Broward County are affiliated with Nova Southeastern University, according to the university.
On Saturday, the Broward County Health Department confirmed that the six positive patients all traveled internationally to Ireland before travel restrictions were implemented for Europe and the U.K, wrote NSU President Dr. George Hanbury in a press statement.
“NSU is taking decisive and informed action to respond to concerns about the coronavirus while ensuring the continuity of our academic and institutional mission,“ Hanbury wrote.
No other university student, faculty or staff member has tested positive for COVID-19, Hanbury said. NSU’s medical and health care experts interviewed Study Abroad students and have told them to self-isolate. The direction includes any students, faculty or staff members believed to have been in close contact with the positive patients.
NSU suspended all classes on Thursday and will resume them on March 23.
Students are also being told to leave all residence halls and go home or to off-campus housing no later than 5 p.m. Sunday. The university says it is working with students who can’t travel back home to make sure they have housing.
Employees and staff are still reporting to work at the university, Hanbury said.
On Wednesday, all public universities in Florida were told to transition all in-person classes to online platforms. Students were encouraged to go home, stay home and not return to campus for two weeks.
